Different religions and different viewpoints of KARMA- Action
Before dwelling on different .understanding of karma, one should know what does Karma means-
Karma means Deed or Act and leads us to the universal principle of cause and effect. This principle belongs to all life.
HINDU KARMA BELIEFS -
Hindu belief Karma governs all life. All living beings can feel the effects of Karma which ae pain or pleasure.
However only beings that can distinguish right from wrong , such as adult humans can accumulate karma. Animals and young children are not responsible to accumulate Karma as they are incapable of discriminating between right and wrong.
There are three types of karmas
- Sanchita Karma - The sum total of the past karmas yet to be resolved
- Prarabdha karma - That portion of Sanchita karma which is experienced in this life.
- Kriyamana - The karma humans are currently creating, which will bear fruits in future .
All karmic reactions have to be borne by the individual who has done the good and bad karmas. No one can escape the results of Karmic reactions.
The negative karmas come as pains, problems, delays, joblessness, childlessness, widowhood, poverty, disease of mind and body, failures , deprivations etc.
The positive karma come as pleasure, quick jobs being done, good job, good and many children, long life with husband, healthy body, success, accomplishments etc.
If the ego is less one can bear the effects of negative karma more easily, as like during a storm it's the tree which gets affected while a blade of grass which bends remain unaffected.
KARMA IN BUDDHISM -
Buddism which carries many beliefs of Hinduism also believes in cause effect theory for various in equalities present in life.
The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine of Buddhism Our life is dictated by our own past actions and our present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own heaven and our own hell. We are the architects of our own fate.
KARMA IN JAINISM -
Jainism believes Karma is more like a gross material.. Depending upon the nature of the action performed it builds a Karmana sarira which envelops the Jiva from all sides and prevents liberation difficult. As long as karmic substance exists in the body , the soul remains in bondage, its purity and brilliance overshadowed by the darkness and grossness of the Karma layer. The karmic matter affects the Jiva in the following ways.
- Obscures the inborn knowledge of the soul resulting in varying degree of ignorence.
- Obscures the intuitive power of the soul.
- Obscures the blissful nature of the soul.
- Disturbs the inner balance of the soul , causing doubt and confusion.
- Impacts the lifespan of the physical body.
- Impacts the life and destiny of an individual and his identity and personal name.
- Impacts his back ground , inheritance, social and family circumstances.
- Renders the soul helpless in performing good deeds despite of its desire to do so
KARMA CHRISTIANITY
As per christianity only God through grace can save humans in the afterlife. Humankind is usually thought to be too sinful to achieve salvation through its own means.
Thus salvation is completely a gift of God’s grace through christ received by faith.
