LEGEND OF JUPITER AND VENUS

Sukran and Brahspati were learning together under Angiras. Angiras is the father of Brahspati.

Suran is the son of Bhrigu. However Sukran got dissatisfied with the better and partial treatment met to Brhaspati . Hence he left the Guruklam and went to learn under Rishi Gowthamar. Under his guidance Lord Sukran went and prayed to Lord Shiva near Gowthami river.

After intense prayers he got the blessing of Sanjivini mantram as per which he had the capacity to get bring back dead and make them alive.

Later Lord Sukran became the guru of Asuras. With the help of this mantram the strength of Asuras increased many fold.

Brhaspati the Son of Angiras was the Devaguru. In order to get the mantram , Devaguru send in his son `kachhan in disguise. He entered into the portals of the Asuras and the daughter of Sukracharya `Devayani fell in love with  Kachan.

In the meanwhile the asuras discovered the identity of `kachan and put him to death. However Sukracharya on request of his dear daughter Devayani brought him back to life. This happened several times.. Learning this the Asuras killed `kachan , burnt his body and the ashes they mixed with the wine and gave to their preceptor Sukracharya. Not knowing this he drank the wine. However `kachan learned the `Mirtyu sanjivini mantram from inside the Sukracharyas body and came out tearing his body.Later he brings back Sukraacharya to life by telling the `Mrityu Sanjivini mantram.

But he refuses to marry Devayani saying he is now the son of Sukracharya and hence the brother of Devayani and refuses to be her lover and leaves the place to Devaloka to impart the `mirtyu Sanjivini mantra to the Devas.

LEGEND TWO - Once Lord Shiva tries to kill the Asura Andakakaran but because of Sukracharyas intervention he was not able to do that., this angers Lord Shiva who swallows him. But Lord Sukracharya comes out of Shivas body in the form of semen. Hence he becomes now mre powerful getting the strength of Lord Shiva too..

LEGEND 3 -  In Vamana avatram Sukracharya is the guru of Mahabali. When Lord Vishnu comes as Vamana asking `biksha from `Mahabali with the intention of finishing him. Sukracharya comes to kow about it and hides as bee inside the kamandalam. Lord Vishnu knowing that pokes the eye of the bee with the Dharba grass and Sukracharya loses his one eyesight.

LEGEND OF BRHASPATHI - GURU

Brhaspathi is known for charity. In one kingdom the king was a devotee of Brhaspathi. He had 7 sons . After the marriage of his sons , the wives did not do charity like previously done. Many learned persons and Brahmins went empty handed coming to the palace. This lack of charity brought the kingdom and the sons to penury. The king died of old age and the sons went to foreign lands to make money. After the death of the king the kingdom was let with out a ruler.

However the last sons wife after heeding to the advice of elders started giving charity to the deserving .

Now in order to choose the next ruler a temple elephant was given a garland to put it on the most deserving person. It went around and put it on a person who happened to be the last son of the late king , who had come to the kingdom in disguise.

The charity done by his wife helped him and he came and took over the throne. Later on knowing the importance of charity the rest of the wives also started doing charity and in due course the sons returned and started staying together taking care of the kingdom and doing their prayers to Brhaspathi.

Brhaspathi is considered as the light of atma, the JIVA. He represents purity, bhakthi, wisdom etc. He was born of Rishi Angiras and mother Swaroopa. He had three wives. Subha, Tara and Mamatha.

Subha had 7 daughters, Tara had seven sons and Mamtha ( who is actually the wife of his brother) had two son - Bharthvaja and Kachhan.

Guru takes one year to cross one rasi. When it crosses each Rasi, the first 12 days is called `pushkaram which is connected to different rivers in India. One of the pushkaram is Mahamagam in Kumbakonam.
